The Story

This necklace is handmade in Guatemala, where beadwork sits alongside a much older and better-known textile tradition: the backstrap-loom weaving of the Maya highlands. Diamonds, zigzags, and stepped lines are foundational motifs in that weaving vocabulary, appearing across huipiles and sashes from different highland towns, each community reading and combining them somewhat differently.

Here, that same geometric language is translated into seed beads rather than woven thread. The tight diamond banding at the top of the necklace and the rhythmic black-and-white stacking through the lower strands echo the patterning logic of the loom — repetition, symmetry, and contrast used to build a design that reads clearly from a distance and rewards a closer look.

Working in monochrome rather than the vivid multicolor typical of many highland textiles lets the geometry itself carry the piece, a contemporary styling choice built on a traditional structural pattern.

Each strand starts as a length of thread and a tray of seed beads sorted by color. The artisan strings the beads one at a time, following a counted pattern to keep the diamonds and stripes aligned across every strand, then gathers the finished strands into graduated layers and finishes the ends by hand so the necklace adjusts to sit at different lengths. It's slow, repetitive work — a single necklace can take hours to string — and it rewards a steady hand more than shortcuts.

Questions & Answers

How long is this necklace?

It adjusts up to 42 inches, so you can wear it long or shorten it for a higher, more collared look.

What is the necklace made of?

It's made from small glass seed beads, hand-strung in black and white on multiple layered strands.

Is it heavy to wear?

No — despite the multi-strand look, seed beads keep the necklace lightweight and comfortable for everyday wear.

Will my necklace look exactly like the photo?

It will be very close, but since each strand is strung by hand, you may notice small differences in bead placement or pattern spacing compared to the picture.

How should I clean and store it?

Avoid water and harsh products, and store it flat or loosely coiled to keep the strands from tangling and the beads and thread in good condition.
