The Story

The bone beads on this necklace are hand-carved using traditional techniques and sourced from Africa, where bone carving has long been a practical, skilled craft — beads shaped and smoothed from bone that would otherwise go to waste, each one carrying small variations from the hand that cut it.

The frosted recycled glass beads sit alongside the bone as another material-first tradition: crushed or reclaimed glass is reformed into beads and given a matte, sea-glass-like finish rather than a polished shine, so the necklace reads as tactile and grounded rather than glossy.

The coconut wood and black wood sections round out the piece with a different kind of craft — wood cut into discs and rounds, sanded and finished by hand. Together, the four materials are arranged in deliberate blocks rather than randomly mixed, letting each origin and texture read as its own distinct passage along the strand.

Each material here is worked by hand before it ever reaches the stringer: bone is cut, shaped, and carved into beads using techniques passed down among African bone carvers; recycled glass is reformed and given a frosted finish; coconut wood and black wood are cut into discs and rounds and sanded smooth. A finisher then sorts and grades the beads by size and tone, strings the graduated sequence by hand, and sets a hammered brass toggle clasp — the kind of hand-assembly that means the exact placement of beads on your necklace won't be duplicated on the next one off the table.
