The Story

The fringe on this collar is built from wood beads individually wrapped in scraps of recycled fabric, a way of putting leftover cloth trim from garment and textile production to use rather than discarding it. The result is a necklace where no two color clusters repeat exactly, since the wrapping depends on whatever remnant fabric was on hand that day.

Threaded in among the wrapped beads are rounds of tiger's eye, carnelian, and onyx. India, and Rajasthan in particular, is one of the world's major centers for cutting and polishing semi-precious stone, so gemstone beads like these are a familiar material in Indian jewelry-making, valued for the natural color and banding each stone carries rather than for any single pattern or symbol.

The front band itself is built from small linked wire loops, a chainmail-style technique that gives the collar structure and shine while keeping it lightweight. Paired with the memory wire, which holds its curved shape and needs no clasp, the piece combines two different metalworking approaches into one comfortable, ready-to-wear form.

Women artisans in India cut fabric scraps into small strips and wrap them by hand around wood bead cores, securing each one before it's strung. The gemstone beads are added in alongside the wrapped ones, and every bead and stone is individually looped onto a small jump ring, which is then attached to the handwoven wire band running along the front of the collar. The memory wire is shaped last, giving the necklace its curve and letting it go on and off without a clasp.

Craft & Materials
  • Made In: India
  • Craft Tradition: Hand-wrapped textile beadwork
  • Ideal For: Someone who wants a colorful, textural statement necklace for dressing up a simple outfit or a special occasion.
  • Wear It With: Wear with a solid-color top or dress so the collar's color and texture stay the focus.
  • Purpose: statement necklace, special-occasion wear, gifting, everyday color accent
  • Gemstone: Tiger's eye, carnelian, onyx
  • Metal: Nickel-free alloy metal (gold-tone)

Tiger's eye is a quartz known for its golden-brown chatoyant banding, the silky shimmer that shifts as it catches the light. Carnelian is a reddish-orange chalcedony prized for its warm, translucent color, while onyx is a chalcedony that forms in smooth black bands. Strung together here as rounded beads, the three stones give the fringe its mix of warm and dark tones alongside the wrapped textile beads.

Questions & Answers

What is this necklace made of?

The fringe combines wood beads hand-wrapped in recycled textile scraps with tiger's eye, carnelian, and onyx gemstone beads, all set on a nickel-free alloy metal collar.

Does it have a clasp?

No. The collar is made from flexible memory wire that holds its curved shape, so it slips on and off without a clasp.

Will my necklace look exactly like the photo?

Not exactly. Because the beads are individually wrapped by hand in recycled fabric, the color mix and fringe placement vary slightly from piece to piece.

How do I take care of it?

Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after wearing, store it flat or hanging to keep the fringe from tangling, and keep it away from water, perfume, and lotion.

Who makes this necklace?

It's handmade by women artisans in India as part of a fair trade production process.
