The Story

The embroidery on this tunic draws on two motifs found throughout Indian textile work: the small five-petaled flower, scattered here across the body and sleeves, and the paisley or boteh, the curved teardrop shape running down the front placket and hem. The boteh has been a staple of Indian embroidery and weaving for centuries, showing up in everything from Kashmiri shawls to block-printed cottons, and it's recognized as one of the subcontinent's most widely traveled patterns.

On this piece the motifs are worked in white thread on navy cotton, concentrated most densely at the neckline and shoulders, the way embroidery on many Indian tunics and kurtas is built outward from the collar as a focal point before thinning out toward the hem. The result is a garment that reads as ornamented at the top and left more open below, a common balance in hand-embroidered Indian tunics.

Made in India, the tunic reflects a garment-making tradition where embroidery is added to finished or cut cotton panels by hand, rather than machine-stitched in bulk, which is why the placement and density of the stitching can shift slightly from one tunic to the next.

A tunic like this starts as cut cotton panels, with the floral and paisley pattern marked onto the fabric before any thread is laid. An embroiderer then works the design by hand, needle and cotton thread, filling in each flower and paisley one stitch at a time until the motif is dense enough to stand out clearly against the navy ground. A single tunic's embroidery can take a considerable number of hours, since the coverage across the yoke, sleeves, and front panels is continuous rather than a few isolated accents.

Questions & Answers

What size should I order?

Check the flat garment measurements against your own — for example, size M measures 42" at the chest and 48" at the hip flat — and add 4-6" for how much ease you like, since these are relaxed, A-line fits.

Will my tunic look exactly like the one in the photo?

It will be close but not identical. Because the embroidery is done by hand, you can expect slight variation in color, print, and stitch placement from piece to piece.

How should I wash this tunic?

Hand wash separately for the first couple of washes; after that, a cold wash, tumble dry, and medium iron are fine, but continuing to hand wash separately will help protect the embroidered threads over time.

What is the tunic made of?

It's 100% cotton, with the floral and paisley pattern hand embroidered in white cotton thread over the navy fabric.

What's the fit and sleeve length like?

It's an A-line cut with a round neckline, side slits, and three-quarter length sleeves, designed to skim the body rather than cling.
