The Story

The fabric on these beads is kantha cloth, a running-stitch textile tradition rooted in West Bengal and Bangladesh, where old cotton saris and dhotis are layered and hand-stitched into thick, quilted fabric. Kantha began as a household practice of reusing worn cloth rather than discarding it, and generations of women have carried the technique forward, turning soft, faded prints into new material with its own texture and history.

In this necklace, scraps of that reclaimed fabric are cut and wrapped tightly around beads, so each one carries a fragment of a different sari: a stripe, a floral border, a solid dyed panel. No two beads read the same, because no two scraps of vintage cloth are the same, which is the point of working with reused textiles rather than uniform new ones.

The result is a piece of jewelry built entirely from cloth that already had a life before it — an approach that treats worn saris as raw material worth preserving, not waste.

Each bead starts as a lightweight core that an artisan cuts and wraps in a piece of reclaimed kantha fabric, pulling the cloth taut and securing it by hand so the pattern sits smoothly around the curve. The wrapped beads are then strung and linked by hand across four separate strands, with the lengths graduated so the strands stack evenly when worn. It's slow, repetitive handwork — cutting, wrapping, stringing — done bead by bead rather than by machine, which is why the finished necklace shows the small irregularities of hand construction.

Questions & Answers

What are the beads made of?

Each bead is a core hand-wrapped in reclaimed kantha textile, made from layered, upcycled sari fabric rather than new material.

Will my necklace look exactly like the photo?

Not exactly. Because the beads are wrapped in reused fabric scraps, the colors, prints, and bead placement vary slightly from piece to piece.

How long is the necklace and is it adjustable?

It measures 18.5" and adjusts, so it can sit higher or lower depending on how you fasten it.

How should I store and care for it?

Keep it away from moisture, perfume, and harsh chemicals, and store it flat or hanging so the fabric-wrapped beads keep their shape.

Who makes this necklace?

It's handcrafted by women artisans in India who cut, wrap, and string each bead by hand from reclaimed textile fabric.
