The fabric on these beads traces back to kantha, a running-stitch textile tradition from the Bengal region spanning eastern India and Bangladesh. Historically, women layered worn cotton saris and dhotis, securing them with rows of simple running stitches to make quilts, wraps, and covers built to last — a practical way of giving old cloth a second life. That instinct to reuse rather than discard is the thread connecting an heirloom kantha quilt to a bead like the ones strung here.
Instead of stitching the fabric flat, artisans here cut recycled cotton into strips and wind them tightly around a wooden bead core, so the same patterned cloth that might once have bordered a sari becomes a small, dense sphere of color.
