Mother-of-pearl is the iridescent inner layer of certain mollusk shells, prized for centuries in inlay, button-making, and adornment for the way it catches and scatters light. Sheets of mother-of-pearl are cut and shaped into the rectangle and circle forms, then ground and polished by hand to bring out the shell's natural nacre and even the surface without dulling its shimmer. Each shape is set into a small gold-plated brass bail, then linked to a curved, hand-finished ear hook designed to sit securely in the ear. Because the shell is a natural material, every cutting and polishing pass responds a little differently to its grain, which is why no two finished earrings look quite identical.
