Making a necklace like this starts with sorting recycled cotton fabric — often kantha cloth or other reclaimed textile scraps — into strips, which are wrapped tightly around small wood bead cores and sealed at the edges so the print stays put with wear. Those wrapped beads are then hand-strung alongside cut and polished gemstone beads onto brass wire. Separately, an artisan cuts lengths of brass wire and coils them by hand into the spiral link shapes using pliers, then solders or wire-wraps the connections so the links sit securely between the strands. The three finished strands are gathered, balanced for length, and fitted with a clasp and extender chain — all steps done by hand, one necklace at a time, which is why the fabric mix and bead order are never quite the same twice.
