This jewelry is handmade in Colombia. Women living in low-income rural areas are trained to become expert artisans and employed in the production of each piece. Teaching techniques and improving skills allows these women independence and the ability to work from home.  This generates much needed revenue while making it possible for each artisan to provide for their families and enabling them to be present with their children and loved ones. This socially responsible practice is designed to support micro-economies and cottage industry in rural Columbia.

This bracelet's band is made of woven beads that are reminiscent of the colors on Colombia's flag: blue, red, and yellow. Bracelet features a double tab ornament that measures 1 x 1.25 inches. Bracelet is .75 inches wide and can be adjusted to fit most wrist sizes.

The Story

This bracelet's band is loomed bead by bead in stripes of turquoise, red, and gold-amber, a palette the maker has drawn close to the blue, red, and yellow of Colombia's flag. Beadweaving of this kind is a longstanding craft in Colombian artisan workshops, where patience and a steady hand translate rows of small glass beads into a durable, patterned textile-like band.

The double tab closure, two wooden rings bound with waxed cord, gives the piece a second focal point beyond the woven band itself, echoing the bracelet's stripes in miniature. Pairing a loomed component with a carved or turned wood element is a common approach among Colombian jewelry artisans, who often combine several small-scale techniques in a single piece.

This particular bracelet was made within a fair-trade training program that teaches rural Colombian women beadweaving as a paid, at-home trade, work that lets them earn income while remaining close to their families and communities.

Each band is built one bead row at a time on a loom, with an artisan threading glass beads onto waxed cord and packing each row tight against the last to keep the stripes crisp and the weave even. The wooden tab rings are shaped separately, then lashed to the finished band with wrapped cord, a step that has to be tight enough to hold the closure secure through daily wear. The work is slow and exacting; a single bracelet can take a trained artisan a good part of a day to complete.
