Iraca palm has long been woven by hand in Colombia into hats, baskets, and other everyday goods, prized for a fiber that's fine, pliable, and durable once dried and dyed. Here, artisans adapt that same wrapping technique on a smaller scale, winding narrow strands of iraca tightly around bead cores to build the striped, textured beads that anchor this necklace.
The smooth beads between them are acai seeds, cleaned and polished from the fruit of the acai palm. Using the seed rather than discarding it turns an agricultural byproduct into a durable, renewable material for beadwork, a practice with deep roots in artisan communities across Colombia's palm-growing regions.
