The Story

Beadwork has been part of daily and ceremonial dress in Ghana for generations, worn by Akan, Krobo, and other communities as adornment, gifts, and markers of occasions from naming ceremonies to festivals. Beads are strung, combined by color and shape, and passed down or added to over a lifetime rather than treated as disposable accessories.

The painted beads on this cuff carry the small hand-drawn irregularities typical of beads finished by hand rather than machine-stamped: no two beads are painted in exactly the same way, which is part of what gives Ghanaian beaded pieces their individual character. Paired here with brass beads and a simple leather band, the design translates that beading tradition into an everyday, wearable cuff rather than ceremonial regalia.

Brass has its own long history in West African metalwork, historically cast and worked by hand for jewelry, currency, and ornament. Combining brass beads with painted beads on a leather strap reflects a common approach in contemporary Ghanaian accessory-making: mixing materials that each carry their own craft history into one everyday piece.

Each bracelet starts as a cut length of leather, punched with small holes along its edge. The artisan threads beads one at a time onto cord or wire looped through these holes, alternating painted beads, brass beads, and small disc beads by hand, then fits and rivets the snap closures so the band can be sized to the wearer's wrist. Because the beads are threaded and set by hand, spacing and orientation vary slightly from one bracelet to the next.

What is the bracelet made from?

It's made from a leather band strung with hand-painted beads, brass beads, and small disc beads, finished with a metal snap closure.

Will the beads or leather look exactly like the photo?

Close, but not identical. Since each bracelet is hand-strung and the beads are hand-painted, you'll see minor natural variation in bead pattern and leather grain from piece to piece.

It comes in black or brown leather, both finished with the same mix of painted and brass beads.

How should I care for the leather?

Keep it dry and wipe it down with a soft cloth; avoid soaking it or leaving it in direct sun for long periods.
