The Story
The fabric beads on this bracelet are made from Kantha cloth, a running-stitch textile tradition rooted in Bengal, in eastern India and neighboring Bangladesh. Kantha began as a household practice: women layered worn cotton saris and dhotis, then stitched them together with simple running stitches, often in dense, rippling patterns, to make quilts, wraps, and covers that got a second life out of cloth otherwise headed for the scrap pile.
Here, that same resourcefulness is scaled down to a single bead. Offcuts and remnants of Kantha-stitched cloth are cut, rolled, and bound into small round beads, so the flecks of red, mustard, teal, and cream you see in each bead are actual pieces of stitched, previously-used fabric rather than a printed pattern. No two beads come out the same, because no two scraps of cloth are the same.
Pairing those fabric beads with brass, wood, and bone reflects a common approach among artisan jewelers in India: mixing a recycled or reclaimed material with more conventional metal and natural elements, so the piece feels considered rather than purely improvised.
Women artisans in India hand-cut and roll the Kantha fabric scraps into beads, then string each of the bracelet's five coils separately — one row of wood, one of brass, one of bone, one of brass discs, one of fabric beads — before winding them together around a single flexible wire. Because the fabric supply is scrap-based and the beads are shaped and strung by hand, the color mix and bead placement shift slightly from piece to piece.
