This necklace is built from India's textile waste stream: offcuts and remnant fabric left over from garment and sari production, which would otherwise be discarded, are cut into small strips and wrapped tightly around wood beads salvaged from furniture scrap. The result is a necklace where no two beads are identical, since each one is cut from whatever scrap of pattern or color was on hand that day.
Fabric-wrapped beadwork like this sits alongside a much older regional habit of turning worn or leftover cloth into something new rather than letting it go to waste — the same instinct behind quilted kantha textiles made from layered old saris.
