The Story
The diamond lattice printed across this tunic draws on ikat, a resist-dye weaving tradition practiced across India for centuries, most famously in Telangana's Pochampally villages and in Odisha's bandha weaving. In true ikat, threads are bound and dyed in sections before weaving so the pattern emerges with the soft, slightly blurred edges that give the technique its name (from the Malay-Indonesian word 'to bind').
That blurred-edge diamond motif has become one of the most recognizable visual languages in Indian textiles, and it's the inspiration behind this tunic's print rather than a woven-in-the-loom ikat itself. The rust, olive and charcoal diamonds nested inside one another echo the concentric forms traditional ikat weavers create by layering multiple rounds of tie-dye resist before setting the warp.
This piece is cut and printed in India, home to the ikat-weaving regions the pattern references, so the design stays connected to the textile tradition that shaped it even as it's rendered here in a printed cotton for easy, everyday wear.
The cotton is woven, then the geometric pattern is printed onto the fabric before it's cut and sewn into the tunic's silhouette. Garment workers in India cut each panel to size, stitch the side seams and vented hem, set the sleeves, and finish the split V neckline and side slits by hand-guided machine work, checking each piece before it moves down the line.
