The Story

This tunic takes its shape from the kurta, the straight-cut, knee-to-hip-length tunic worn across India for centuries by men and women alike. The split neckline seen here — a small V opening rather than a full button placket — is a simplified take on the traditional kurta collar, designed to sit easily over the head while still framing the neckline.

The side slits and vented hem are practical features long used in South Asian tunic-making to allow the body to move freely in a garment that is otherwise cut loose and straight, without darts or fitted seams. Piping along the neckline and cuffs is a common finishing technique in Indian garment work, adding a defined edge and a second color to an otherwise simple silhouette.

Today this silhouette has been adapted into an easy layering top for a Western wardrobe, but the underlying construction — straight body, vented sides, minimal seaming — still reflects the tunic-making conventions of the region where it's made.

A tunic like this starts as woven cotton cloth cut in a straight, generous silhouette by pattern-cutters working in a garment workshop in India. Sewing machine operators join the panels, set the sleeves, and stitch the vented hem and side slits, while a separate line of stitching applies the black piping along the neckline and cuffs — a step that requires steady, careful guiding of the trim so it lies flat and even against the curve of the collar. The tunic is then pressed and finished by hand before it's checked and packed.

Questions & Answers

What size should I order?

Check the flat garment measurements against your own chest and hip measurements, then add 4-6 inches for a comfortable fit. If you're between sizes, size up for a more relaxed drape.

What fabric is this tunic made from?

It's made from 100% cotton, a breathable, natural fabric that softens with wear and washing.

How do I wash this tunic?

Wash it in cold water, tumble dry on low, and iron on medium heat. Avoid bleach to keep the grey shade and black piping from fading.

Will the fit be exactly like the measurements listed?

Since each tunic is handmade, expect a small amount of natural variance in sizing from the flat measurements given.

What makes the neckline and cuffs stand out?

Both are finished with black contrast piping, a tailoring detail that adds a crisp edge and a second color against the solid grey cotton.
