Kantha is a running-stitch tradition from Bengal, the region spanning West Bengal, India and Bangladesh, where generations of women layered worn cotton saris and dhotis and bound them together with rows of small, even straight stitches. What began as a practical way to make quilts, wraps and everyday cloth last longer became, over time, its own visual language — the stitching itself forms the pattern, in close parallel lines or, in more elaborate nakshi kantha work, in figures and motifs.
