The Story
Kantha is a running-stitch tradition rooted in West Bengal, in eastern India, and neighboring Bangladesh. It began as a practical, resourceful craft: women stitched together layers of worn cotton saris and dhotis with simple running stitches, turning soft, used fabric into quilts, wraps, and covers rather than letting it go to waste. Over generations the stitching itself became decorative, building up in dense rows and, in its pictorial form known as nakshi kantha, into figurative motifs of birds, flowers, and everyday scenes.
This tunic draws on that running-stitch technique in a more graphic, contemporary way. Instead of pictorial embroidery, fine white kantha stitching runs in continuous vertical lines across the indigo cotton, giving the cloth a textured, pinstripe-like surface. It's a quieter application of the technique, but the hand-guided logic behind it — small, even, repeated stitches building texture into plain cloth — is the same one that has defined kantha work for generations.
Pairing the stitched cotton with a simple tunic silhouette and clean piping keeps the focus on that handwork, letting the texture of the stitching do the talking rather than layering on extra ornament.
