The Story

Kantha is a running-stitch technique that originated in Bengal, in what is now West Bengal, India, and Bangladesh. Historically, women stitched together layers of worn cotton saris and dhotis with simple, even running stitches to make quilted wraps and cloths for their households — turning fabric that had reached the end of its life into something new and useful.

Over generations that same running stitch became a form of surface embellishment in its own right, worked in close, disciplined rows to build pattern directly into cloth rather than layering it on top. On this tunic, the stitch is used in its most restrained form: fine white thread run in long vertical lines against black cotton, giving the fabric a subtle pinstripe texture rather than the pictorial motifs seen on more elaborate kantha textiles.

The piping at the neckline and hem is a tailoring detail rather than a kantha element, but it sits naturally alongside the stitching, framing the garment the way a kantha border traditionally frames a finished cloth.

Kantha work like this is done by hand, row by row: an artisan threads a needle and works a simple running stitch through the cotton, keeping each line even and consistently spaced across the width of the fabric before it's cut and sewn into the finished tunic. It's slow, repetitive handwork — there's no shortcut to the evenness a practiced hand builds up over thousands of stitches — and it's this hand-stitching, done in India, that gives the fabric its texture and its slightly irregular, handmade character.

Questions & Answers

What is kantha stitch?

Kantha is a traditional hand running-stitch technique from Bengal, India and Bangladesh. On this tunic it's worked in fine white thread in vertical lines across black cotton for a subtle textured pattern.

What size should I order?

Measurements are for the flat garment, ranging from Chest 40"/Hips 42" in size S to Chest 46"/Hips 48" in size XL. Add about 4-6 inches to your body measurements for the intended fit, and allow for slight variance since each piece is handmade.

How do I care for this tunic?

Cold wash, tumble dry on low, medium iron if needed, and do not bleach.

Where is this tunic made?

It's made in India, with the kantha stitching done by hand.

Will the stitching or sizing vary between pieces?

Yes, slightly. Because the kantha stitching is done by hand, expect small variations in stitch spacing and fit from one tunic to the next.
