Woven cotton fabric is cut to pattern and machine-stitched into the tunic's straight panels, with the red piping sewn in along the neckline, cuffs and hem to finish each raw edge cleanly and add a sharp line of contrast against the black. That piping step is done edge by edge on a sewing machine by garment workers in India, which is also why sizing can vary slightly piece to piece.
