Iraca is a palm native to Colombia whose fronds are stripped into fine fiber and dried before weaving — the same base material used for the country's well-known woven hats and baskets. Here, that fiber is worked into a jewelry form: tight, flat coils built up into disk-shaped medallions rather than a brim or vessel.
The coiling technique itself is old and widespread in Colombian fiber craft, built by winding and stitching fiber around a central point in a continuous spiral until it lies flat — the same logic used in coiled basketry, scaled down to the size of a medallion. Alternating natural cream fiber with fiber dyed black lets the weaver play with pattern and contrast disk by disk.
Grouping the disks into an irregular, layered cluster turns individual woven medallions into a single bib-form piece — a way of showing off the weave itself, at a scale and density you wouldn't see in a hat or basket.
Each disk starts as a coil: the weaver anchors a length of iraca fiber at a center point and winds it round and round, stitching each pass to the one before with more fiber, flattening the spiral as it grows until it reaches the right diameter. Some coils are worked in the fiber's natural cream tone, others in fiber that's been dyed black, so the color pattern is set as the disk is built, not painted on after. Once enough disks are finished in a range of sizes, the artisan arranges and stitches them into a layered cluster, then attaches the cluster to the faux leather cord. It's slow, hand-and-eye work — no two clusters lay out exactly the same.
