The Story

The fabric on these beads comes from kantha, a running-stitch textile tradition rooted in West Bengal and neighboring Bangladesh. Historically, kantha began as a practical, resourceful craft: women layered worn cotton saris and dhotis, then bound them together with rows of simple running stitches to make quilts, wraps, and covers for the household. Nothing went to waste — old cloth was mended into something new and useful.

That same spirit of reuse carries into this necklace. Instead of being sewn into a large kantha quilt, strips of the stitched, patterned fabric are wound around wooden bead cores, so the colors, prints, and stitch lines of the original textile scraps show up in miniature on every bead.

Because each bead is wrapped from a different scrap of cloth, no two necklaces read exactly the same — the mix of florals, stripes, and solids is a direct record of whatever saris and cottons were available to be repurposed that day.

To make a bead like this, an artisan cuts strips from recycled kantha cloth and winds them by hand around a wooden bead core, layer over layer, pulling the fabric taut so the print sits smoothly and the bead holds its round shape. The wrapped beads are then finished, sorted by color, and strung by hand alongside the gemstone beads and alloy spacers into three separate strands, which are knotted and joined at the clasp to fall at slightly different lengths.

Craft & Materials
  • Made In: India
  • Craft Tradition: Kantha fabric-wrapped beadwork
  • Ideal For: Someone who wants a bold, colorful statement necklace with a story behind the materials
  • Wear It With: Let it be the focus over a solid-color top or simple dress
  • Purpose: Everyday statement wear, dressing up a plain outfit, gifting
  • Gemstone: Tiger's Eye, Carnelian, Aventurine
  • Metal: Lead- and nickel-free alloy

Tiger's eye, carnelian, and aventurine are three widely worn semi-precious stones, each valued for its distinct color and finish: tiger's eye for its warm golden-brown band of chatoyant light, carnelian for its deep orange-red tone, and aventurine for its cool, flecked green. Scattered among the kantha-wrapped beads here, they add pops of natural color and polish that contrast with the matte texture of the fabric.

Questions & Answers

How long is the necklace?

It measures 20 inches with a 3-inch extender, so you can adjust it to sit at the length you prefer.

What is the fabric on the beads made from?

It's kantha fabric — recycled cotton textile, often reclaimed from saris — hand-wrapped around wooden bead cores.

Will my necklace look exactly like the one in the photo?

Not exactly. Because each bead is wrapped from a different scrap of recycled fabric, the color placement and print mix will vary slightly from piece to piece.

Is this necklace hypoallergenic?

The metal findings are made from a lead- and nickel-free alloy, making them a safer choice for sensitive skin.

How should I store this necklace?

Lay it flat in a dry spot away from direct sunlight and moisture to help the fabric-wrapped beads keep their color and shape.
