The beads on this necklace are wrapped in scraps of Kantha cloth, a textile tradition from West Bengal and neighboring Bangladesh best known for its running-stitch quilts, where layers of worn saris and dhotis are stitched together into new, sturdy cloth rather than thrown away. That same instinct for giving old fabric a second life carries into this piece: rather than stitching whole quilts, artisans cut the leftover cloth into strips and wind them around wood beads, so the fabric's original color and print survive in miniature on every bead.
Because the source cloth comes from many different worn saris, no two beads carry the same exact pattern or shade, even within a single strand of blue.
