The Story
This tunic's marbled blue-and-white pattern comes from hand tie-dyeing, a resist-dye process with deep roots in Indian textile making. Rather than printing a pattern onto finished cloth, the dyer works with the cotton itself — folding, twisting, or binding sections of fabric so that dye can only reach certain areas, then submerging it in a dye bath. Where the fabric is bound, the original color resists; where it's exposed, the dye takes hold, and the two blend at the edges into the soft, swirling gradients seen here.
India has practiced hand resist-dyeing on cotton and silk for centuries, developing regional variations that range from fine, tightly knotted dot-work to looser, freehand folding like the technique used on this piece. What unites them is the same basic logic: pattern created by controlling where dye can and cannot go, rather than by drawing or printing it on afterward.
Because the fabric is folded and dyed by hand rather than run through a printing press, no two tunics dye up exactly alike — the swirl on this piece is its own, unrepeatable pattern.
To make a piece like this, an artisan starts with plain woven cotton and works it by hand — folding, scrunching, or twisting sections of the fabric before it goes into a dye bath of blue pigment. The bound areas resist the dye while the rest of the cloth absorbs it, and the artisan controls the folds to steer where the color pools, streaks, and fades into white. Once the desired depth of color is reached, the fabric is rinsed, dried, and cut and sewn into the finished tunic, with navy piping added by hand along the neckline, sleeve cuffs, and hem to frame the print.
