The Story

The swirling pink-and-white pattern on this tunic comes from hand tie-dyeing, a resist-dye technique long practiced across India's textile-producing regions, in which cloth is twisted, bound, or crumpled by hand before being dipped in dye. The dye settles unevenly into the folds, producing soft, marbled bands rather than a printed, repeating motif.

India has a centuries-old tradition of hand-dyeing cotton and silk this way, ranging from the fine dot-resist bandhani of Gujarat and Rajasthan to looser, swirl-style tie-dyeing done elsewhere in the country. This tunic belongs to that broader family of resist-dye work: the final pattern depends on how the fabric was folded and how it sat in the dye bath, which is why the marbling reads a little differently on every garment.

The result is a print that can't be mechanically duplicated. It's a direct record of a dyer's hands and choices, made length by length rather than run off a printing press.

Each tunic begins as plain woven cotton, which a dyer folds, twists, or gathers and binds tightly before submerging it in a dye bath. The bound sections resist the dye unevenly, and where the fabric pulls apart from itself in the folds, color pools and streaks to create the marbled effect. Once the cloth is dyed and dried, it's cut and sewn into the tunic's silhouette, with contrast piping stitched along the neckline, cuffs, and hem. Because the dyeing happens before the fabric is cut, the exact placement of color on one tunic will never match another.

Questions & Answers

Will my tunic look exactly like the one in the photo?

Not exactly — because the print is hand tie-dyed, the placement and intensity of the marbling varies from piece to piece, so yours will be uniquely its own.

What size should I order?

Check the flat garment measurements against your own chest and hip measurements, then add 4-6 inches for a comfortable fit, and allow for slight variance since each piece is handmade.

How should I care for this tunic?

Cold wash, tumble dry on medium, iron on medium, and do not bleach.

What fabric is it made from?

100% cotton.

Where is this tunic made?

It's hand tie-dyed and made in India.
